BDX recently conducted a study to provide builders visibility into the home shopper' world, to advance the online experience, and to drive more empowered and knowledgable home shoppers into the communities and to the homes that best meet their needs. About the Study The Home Shopper's Journey Study is an ethnographic diary study that followed 38 home shoppers for six weeks in their quests to find new construction homes. BDX talked with each participant every week about what they had done, what was going well in their process, and what wasn't. Throughout the process, they captured video snippets along the way to provide a more vivid sense of the buyer experience. One of the key findings was the need for visualization tools during the online home search phase. Buyer Behavior & The Need For Visualization BDX Home Shopper Journey Study: Online Visualization Tools Essential to Home Shoppers Home shoppers typically begin the process overwhelmed by all of the available online resources. They experiment with online listing services like Realtor.com & Newhomesource.com, builder websites, and agent websites to narrow their sources down to the ones that give them the information they are seeking. Next, they use these sources to narrow their list of communities and homes to visit. The home shopper's minimum expectation level for online new home resources has been set by existing home listings. At a minimum, home shoppers expect to see substantial visual tools including photographs of the home's interior and exterior, yard, rooms, and layout. They also prefer sites and listings that offer video walk-throughs and are delighted by interactive and virtual tours of the community and home.
